Oh, man. Bummer.

Cupid twitched his whiskers as he watched the kiss that had promised to be his ticket back to Mt. Olympus fizzle out and die. Without thinking about what he was doing, he scurried to follow Joel out before he closed the door. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, but since Abby was clearly the unwilling party here, it was probably pointless to hang around with her. So he trotted along behind the male half of the mortal couple, scrambling for plan B, wondering why plan A backfired in the first place.

Abby was clearly scared of something, but Cupid couldn’t figure out what. This Joel dude seemed like a nice enough guy. For a grownup. And his motorcycle was, like, way cool. So it must be some hang-up with her. But what?

Suddenly, he regretted leaving with Joel. He was about to turn tail—literally—and try to meow his way back into Abby’s good graces, but Joel suddenly halted and spun around. For a moment, Cupid thought his companion was going to go back and fight like a man. In fact, Joel did take a step back toward Abby’s front door. But just as suddenly, he changed his mind again and turned back toward the stairs.

Curious now, Cupid followed. He didn’t think Joel had even noticed his presence until he opened his front door and waited for the cat to join him. When they were both inside, he closed the door behind them, clearly lost in thought. But Joel never said a word as he fell back onto the sofa and stared up at the ceiling.

Maybe, Cupid thought as he watched Joel gaze at nothing, the secret lay with him, after all.
